    Community Outreach

Yesterday was amazing!!!! I am so happy to be serving at a church that is willing to take risks. Yesterday July 12 we canceled all of our services which is now 4 of them and went to "be" the church. We ended up with hundreds of people serving at 14 different locations in our city. People from the West, Central, and East Auditoriums on our campus came together and made a HUGE impact in our community.

Then last night we came back to celebrate together. Our great LW stayed all afternoon to make this video. The energy in the room last night at the celebration with electric. I must say again our event The church Has Left The Building went better than I ever expected.  I am convinced with all my heart that greater things are still to be done in our city.

    Simple Questions

I remember last October sitting in a hotel room and thinking that doing a summer series would be a challenge.  We normally do 4-5 part series and to keep interest and energy for 7 weeks I felt would be a challenge.  But my dad felt strongly that we should pursue a series on choices during the summer.  So, we came up with the idea of Simple Questions.

I have been blow away at what God has done in our community over the last 5 wks.  We have looked so far at these questions:
    • Will you believe in God's love
    • Will you accept God's forgiveness
    • Will you follow Christ leadership
    • Will you choose to Forgive
    • Will you trust God with your future

This series has really spoken to me a lot.  I received an email today that said the last couple of weeks this series has really been speaking to them and caused them to make some changes in their life.  At the end of service last Sunday someone came up to me and told me the story of what God was doing in their life because of what God had been dealing with them through this series.

Again these simple questions have huge implications to them. I believe they can alter your life to be more like Christ if we can see the significance the question.

Ethos, thank you for hanging in there with us over the summer.  I want you to know that leading this community is a joy.  There are so many weeks where I feel so unqualified to teach because I compare myself to other teachers of the word.  The enemy comes in to tell me that I am not good enough or that I don't know enough, but what I am finding is that if I am called by God to lead ethos that it will all workout.   I am in this community heart and soul.  My passion is to never just teach the bible at people but to share the story of God with people.  I am learning to be vulnerable and be willing to admit my own weaknesses with our community.  Thank you for believing in my leadership!

    Staffapalooza

Just about 4-6 wks ago we felt as a team at City Church that we didn't have enough fun together. So we invented STAFFAPALOOZA.  Staffapalooza is centered around fun and just hanging out together.  Tonight we has a blast as a team.  We laughed, talked, played games, watched kids swim, ate and to be honest I think we strengthened our team.

There was no doubt that we worked hard as a team but we felt that we didn't take enough time just to be together.  I love the fact that the people that I work with are not just co-workers but friends.  Not just friends at work but friends that I really do care about.

If you work with a team of people why don't you try to break the mold and do something fun.  Who knows maybe productivity as a team may increase as you play together.

    New Team Structure

Over the past few weeks and months I have been working on a new team structure for Ethos.  We have asked 7 people to help up take Ethos to the next level.  We are going to start having a once a month meeting and I am convinced that this is going to help us begin to reach more people for Christ.

Here is my first attempt on paper on what this might look like.  We are still not for sure on the names for all theses positions but this is what we have so far.  All I knew was that I didn't want a typical org chart.  Ethos is a very organic community and I want our structure to feel the same way.

    The Point

    Point

Tonight we are having our Point Gathering for our volunteer leaders at Ethos.  Every other month here at Ethos we have a gathering called The Point where we talk, share, and have fun together as a team. Actually to volunteer at Ethos you must be willing to come to the point or you can't volunteer.  I know it sounds crazy but we wanted to set accountability into volunteering at Ethos from the beginning.

Tonight we asked everyone to bring some food with them so that we all eat together.  I am going to share the vision again with our team and let them know what season of ministry I think we are in right now. This is also a great way for me as the pastor to pour into the team that give so sacrificially every week. This is just our way to connect volunteers to each other and the mission that God has called us to.

Can't wait to see all of our Ethos volunteers tonight!

    Fathers Day

Today I just had to express how honored I am to have my dad in my life.  He has and continues to be an amazing friend to me and his wisdom blows me away.  This past week I took my dad to lunch for Fathers Day since he would be out of town today and when I got done I called Mande and told her that my dad blows me away at his outlook on life.

My dad has pastored City Church of Chattanooga now for over 32 yrs.  The amazing things is he is not done fighting for what God still wants to do in this community and through his ministry.  He wants to finish strong.  My dad has an amazing ability to see the good in everyone.  This morning my dad called me from Colorado and told me that he would be praying for me as I speak in both services at City Church.  My dad has taught me everything I know about being a pastor and communicator of the Word of God.

I love to watch my dad with his grandkids.  My boys love their poppop like crazy.  They love his magic tricks but most of all they just love the fact that he will get in the floor and play with them.  My dad has ALWAYS stood up for what he felt strongly about.   He has more influence around the world than he even realizes.

My dad has taught me so much about life and today I just wanted to say "Happy Fathers Day Dad" I love you so much.  Thank you for everything you have done in my life.  I am honored to be your son!

    Determination pt.2

    1

Ok so lets pick back up on the leadership post.  So far we have talked about that leaders must be able to set direction and they must have determination.  Let me add a few more thoughts on determination.  Many times being a leader is a very unrewarding job.  It seems that it is few and far between that people tell you how much your leadership means to them.

The reality is leaders must have determination.  They must be able to get up everyday and push through the hard decisions even if no one notices.  Leader must have an inner drive that pushes them to achieve the future.  I think anther way to say it is when a person takes on a level of leadership the must have a since of being called.

Leaders must be determined not to give up but find it deep in there soul to move the team and or the organization forward.

    Quick Update

Sorry its been so long since I have written any thing.  Last we had our Day Camp and we had 155 kids attend and I was running around like crazy.  I promise to get back to my blog this week.  I have missed being on here but there was just no way to keep it up this past week.  I am looking to finish up my leadership post.

Tomorrow I have to hit the inbox early I have 155 emails waiting on me.  I think this will be a pretty quiet week since a lot of our staff are on vacation.  I have been wanting to re-arrange my office at work and might just try to get it done this week but will have to wait and see.  Ok thats it for tonight but there will be more this week.
